That means there are many tile flooring types–and they all behave very differently. They have different strengths and absorption levels that determine how they are to be used.
Walking into the store, you'll see almost unlimited colors, designs, shapes, and sizes. Know that they all aren't alike, and using the wrong one will affect your project.
Porcelain tile: heavier, more dense
This composition includes kaolin (a non-absorbent), clay, sand, and glass. It's also fired at higher temperatures than most, resulting in an ultra-strong tile.
It is ideal for heavily trafficked floors in busy rooms like the kitchen. Porcelain tiles can be used indoors or out, standing up to the most severe weather, such as freeze-thaw cycles.
Porcelain is a large format tile. It comes in many colors and designs and can be made to look like anything. It's often preferred for wood-and-stone tile looks.
Porcelain tiles can be either unglazed or glazed. One that you'll see in our showroom is Antalya, a stone look tile created from glazed porcelain manufactured by Happy Floors.
The 4 X 4 square: thinner and durable, mainly when glazed
This highly designed ceramic is best for indoor use-only tile flooring on moderately trafficked floors. You'll also see them on countertops, walls, backsplashes, etc.
Mosaics: tiny but durable
Currently trending on bathroom floors, mosaics are highly decorative. These often glass-coated pieces are also mold and mildew-resistant. One of interest is Limerock, also by Happy Floors.
Other ceramic tiles include:
- Terracotta bricks. They're highly durable and can be used indoors or outside.
- Subway tiles. These are best for indoor use only, low-traffic rooms.
